The Winnipeg Jets will put their hot streak to the test tonight as they host a freshly-re-signed Marc-Andre Fleury and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Watch the game live on TSN3 starting at 7:30pm et/6:30pm pt. You can also listen to the game live on TSN Radio 1290 Winnipeg starting at 6pm ct. The Jets come in having allowed just six goals over a 5-0-1 burst. They recorded consecutive shutout wins against the New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks before besting the Nashville Predators 3-1 on Tuesday. Ondrej Pavelec made 23 saves and has stopped 88 of the 90 shots he has faced in his last three games. He extended Winnipegs franchise-record shutout streak to 164:44 before yielding a goal early in the second period. Wins change the pressure on the bench, and the confidence, said Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice. Then as you get further and further into a rhythm of doing the same things over and over again in your own end you start to feel comfortable there. We made some mistakes and had some things go away from us at times, but success makes everything feel a little bit better, and a little more calm. Pavelec, though, is just 2-12-2 lifetime versus the Penguins with a 4.33 GAA and .867 save percentage. He was backed on Tuesday by power-play goals from Andrew Ladd and Mark Scheifele, while Blake Wheeler added an empty-net goal in Winnipegs third straight win. The Penguins announced a four-year, $23 million extension for Fleury on Wednesday, with the deal set to kick in next season. That locks up the clubs all-time leader in regular-season victories (295) and shutouts (31), though opens Rutherford up to criticism should Fleury continue his erratic postseason performances. Fleury, the first overall pick of the 2003 draft, helped lead Pittsburgh to a Stanley Cup title in 2009, but is just 52-40 in 93 playoff games and even saw himself benched during a first-round series with the New York Islanders in 2013. However, the goaltender has been a solid option during the regular season and has opened his 11th NHL campaign with a 7-2-0 record, 1.89 goals against average and .931 save percentage with three shutouts. I believe in Marc-Andre Fleury, as the team does, Rutherford said in a statement. Hes won before and he will win again. Were very pleased to have him signed long term. Fleurys three shutouts this season have come in his past four starts and he has stopped a total of 54 shots in back-to-back shutout wins over Los Angeles and Buffalo. He is 17-5-0 with a 2.37 GAA and .913 save percentage in his career versus the Jets franchise. Despite his recent run, Penguins coach Mike Johnston opted to start backup Thomas Greiss in Tuesdays contest with the Minnesota Wild. The move worked, with Greiss making 33 saves in a 4-1 win and extending Pittsburghs shutout streak to 205 minutes and 28 seconds before allowing a goal midway through the third period. We kept a lot of stuff to the outside. It made my life easier, Greiss said. I think our defense did a really good job clearing rebounds. Nick Spaling, Brandon Sutter, Chris Kunitz and Patric Hornqvist all scored for the Penguins, who with five straight wins are on their longest winning streak since taking seven straight from Dec. 9-21 of last year. They won the opener of a five-game swing on Tuesday. Kunitz picked up his fifth goal and eighth point in his past four games, while Evgeni Malkin logged an assist to give him a point in all 11 games this season. He has five goals and 11 helpers. Pittsburgh defenseman Olli Maatta did not play as he underwent successful surgery Tuesday to remove a tumor in his thyroid gland. He is expected to return to the lineup within the next four weeks. The Penguins have won each of their past four meetings with the Jets as well as 19 of the last 22 encounters overall. They have also claimed eight of the last 11 road meetings with the Winnipeg/Atlanta franchise. Ryan Meara is a very promising young goalkeeper and has great potential, said RBNY sporting director Andy Roxburgh. But, due to the form of Luis Robles, Ryan was not getting enough competitive games and this year-long loan deal will offset that problem. Well be monitoring his progress with great interest. Meara was drafted by the Red Bulls in the second round (31st pick) of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft out of Fordham University. He made 18 appearances in his first season with the club, posting a 9-5-4 record with three shutouts and 1.50 goals against average before underrgoing season-ending hip surgery in August.dddddddddddd. He did not make a regular-season appearance in the 2013 and 2014 seasons but started in New Yorks three U.S. Open Cup games (2013 and 2014) and all four CONCACAF Champions League games in 2014. A player on intraleague loan may not compete against his former team during the MLS season (includes MLS games and all other competitions) and must remain with his new team for the entire season, per MLS rules. As part of the loan agreement, the Red Bulls acquired midfielder Sal Zizzo on a permanent basis. Zizzo was chosen by NYCFC in Wednesdays expansion draft from Sporting Kansas City. He has spent five seasons in MLS with Chivas USA, the Portland Timbers and most recently SKC. ' ' '

TORONTO -- Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko calls it a revolution and the MLS team is rolling out the big guns. Former league MVP Dwayne De Rosario came back on board Thursday and England striker Jermain Defoe is to be unveiled Monday. It looks like the Spurs star will be joined by U.S. international midfielder Michael Bradley. While Toronto FC officials twisted their tongue into knots Thursday trying not to say anything about Bradley when asked, AS Roma issued a release later in the day saying the American had been sold to Major League Soccer for US$10 million. A source with knowledge of the league subsequently confirmed that the Bradley move to the MLS had passed another significant hurdle. The source also said Toronto FC was the MLS club pursuing him. It represents a remarkable shopping spree, one that should jolt life into both Toronto FC while further adding lustre to Major League Soccer itself. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment is shelling out millions to turn what has been the MLS doormat for seven years into a world force. A club official rejected reports that the combined bill for Defoe and Bradley is C$100 million including wages and transfer fees, but the real number probably isnt that far south. Like any other sport, the big boys of soccer come with big price tags. And MLS teams may have to overpay to overcome European snobbery. For a team yet to make the MLS playoffs, Toronto ownership is thinking big -- well beyond mere post-season play, according to Bezbatchenko. "We want to be internationally recognized as a top club," he said after welcoming De Rosario back at a packed news conference at BMO Field "We want to be competing internationally ... Theres a certain type of player you need to achieve those (goals)." Defoe, 31, and Bradley, 26, will do nicely. The 35-year-old De Rosario, a Toronto native who left the club in 2011 after a contract dispute, adds experience, class and local appeal. Up until now, the only thing world-class about Toronto FC has been its training centre -- a C$20-million-plus complex that probably rivals all but the top clubs in Europe. Poor results have led to management and player turnover which have led to poor results which have led to management and player turnover. MLSE president and CEO Tim Leiweke, who helped bring David Beckham to MLS, is not one for half-measures and, with the backing of the MLSE board, has opened up the vault for Bezbatchenko and manager Ryan Nelsen. The team has a vision -- and buckets of cash to back it up. "In all honesty it wasnt a really hard sell when you just tell them where were going to go," Nelsen said in describing his sales job to De Rosario. Unfortunately for De Rosario, under the MLS salary cap rules, only a few get to cash in. De Rosario, who ranks sixth on the all-time MLS scoring list with 103 goals, made US$654,300 in 2013. He will undoubtedly earn less in Toronto, but said his return to Toronto is about more than money. "For me right now its about winning ... You cant put a price on that," he said. Its a comment that speaks volumes about todays De Rosario, who once was all about the numbers on his paycheque. Remember the 2010 goal celebration that saw him pretend to sign a cheque, by way of showcasing his financial discontent in Toronto. Once seemingly more concerned about the De Rosario brand than anything else, the veteran midfielder has changed his stripes in recent years. With the national team, he has worn the captains armband and, at a Canada training camp in Arizona in early 2013, went out of his way to connect with younger players. The new galaxy of TFC stars will probably have to build bridges with their lesser-paid teammates. Fullback Ryan Richter, for example, made US$34,125 last season while several others made US$46,500. MLS is a league of have- and have-nots. Most Toronto players will be more acquainted with a Metropass than a Porsche. Jordan Hamilton isnt complaining, however. Toronto FC also announced the signing of the 17-year-old academy product Thursday. "A dream, come true," said the young forward. A dream that may include training next to Defoe. "To be practising alongside Defoe, what more could a 17-year-old ask for," Hamilton said with amazement. While MLSE is spending big, Nelsen says the teams salary cap is actually in better shape that the bottom line bloated with bad contracts that he inherited last season. As he noted, designated players may cost millions but their salary cap hit is US$390,000 The arrival of Defoe and Bradley as designated players, along with Gilberto and incumbent midfielder Matias Laba means that Toronto has four DPs -- one over the limit. Laba is the odd man out, with Nelsen only saying at this stage that there are contingency plans. As Nelsen points out, the MLSE board has dug deep into its pockets because it believes this is smart spending. In the short term, improvements are needed to retain and build on the 14,600 season-ticket base. With an average attendance of 18,131, the franchise ranked 10th in the league. MLSE will have looked longingly at Seattles league-leading average of 44,038. But MLSE also wants to overhaul and expand BMO Field, likely pouring in C$100 million-plus to add a roof and refit the bare-bones stadium to allow for football and other events. The 22,00-seat capacity BMO was built on a $62-million shoestring, probably less than what Defoe and Bradley will cost. Leiweke mused recently about Toronto hosting an NHL Winter Classic, likely timed with the Maple Leafs 100th anniversary season in 2016-17. A revamped BMO could also host outdoor music festivals, which were another string to the MLSE bosss bow when he ran the Anschutz Entertainment Group. AEG is the second-largest music promoter in the world (behind Live Nation), staging tours by Justin Bieber, Bon Jovi, Prince and Taylor Swift and running events like the New Orleans Jazz Festival, the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and Stagecoach Festival. Leiweke, a music fan who has attended Coachella, already has a big-name local music buddy in Drake, MLSEs global ambassador who helped sell Toronto to Defoe. De Rosario, Defoe and Bradley will sell tickets -- and more than a few jerseys. Defoe is a charismatic striker with an eye for goal, although one club official mused that recently signed Brazilian striker Gilberto may score more goals this season. In return for a huge investment, the compact East Londoner offers Toronto FC respectability (55 caps for England) as well as scoring chops (more than 200 goals in all competitions). He will also serve as a club ambassador, charming and entertaining off the pitch. Bradley will run the midfield. Add Brazilian midfielder Jackson and U.S. international fullback Justin Morrow to the young roster that remains from a six-win 2013 season and Toronto FC promises to be interesting watching when the season opens March 15 in Seattle. For the league, its compelling evidence that the North American league is a legitimate soccer destination. "We want to be leading the way," Bezbatchenko said. "The transformation this club has undergone the past three months is indicative of where were headed and what we want to do with player signings," he continued. "We want to be top-class in the league, in every way." While some fans -- following Leiwekes Leaf dreams -- may be planning the TFC parade route, his braintrust knows there is more work to be done in turning around a squad that went 6-17-11 last season. Exhibit 1 is the Toronto Blue Jays, whose shopping spree produced little more than disappointment last year. Nelsen knows an expensive bill does not necessarily make for a fine meal. "Look, were improved as a team. Everybody can see that. Were better. Were going get better. Are we the finished product? No, not at all ... Weve got a lot of work to do." He welcomed the pressure to win. "Love it, everybody loves it," he said. "Players want that, everybody want that, the coaches want that." Improvement will be an ever-present mantra, he added. Bezbatchenko, meanwhile, was not about to puncture the fans balloon. "Let them have their fun. Lets let our fans enjoy the moment because we are making trades, we are signing Dwayne, Gilberto. Were signing some really exciting players. "So let them have their moment because its going to be a fun ride." De Rosario clearly adds some class to the journey. He took time out during his moment at the microphone to note that Canadian national team coach Benito Floro was in attendance. As with the national team, he will also help mentor a young roster. Twenty of the 26 players on TFCs current roster are 25 or younger. Toronto selected De Rosario in Stage 2 of the MLS re-entry draft last month after D.C. United opted not to pick up his option at the end of the season. Nelsen called him a "legend" of Canadian soccer but said De Rosario would have to adapt his game to the demands of the team and his body. "All the great players redefine their roles on the field, in their training schedules, everything on and off the field. When you get to a certain age," said the 36-year-old Nelsen, speaking from experience De Rosario, who turns 36 in May, isnt taking any steps back, however. "Im a goal-scorer, Im a winner ... Im here to win, Im not just here to be the local kid coming back." When a reporter suggested he was in the "latter stages" of his career, De Rosario politely disagreed and said the competitive juices are still flowing. But the 13-year MLS veteran did say Toronto would be the last stop on his playing career. All it took was "a simple phone call," albeit not one De Rosario ever expected after his earlier disagreements with the franchise. He admitted it helped that the previous regime had all left. NOTES -- Nelsen confirmed that English fullback Richard Eckersley will not be coming back due to his hefty contract. Striker Robert Earnshaw has yet to respond to a contract offer, but Nelsen believes that the Welsh international will move on in a bid to get playing time. The manager also said other clubs are interested in U.S. forward Bright Dike and, while he would like to keep him, he will have to listen to any good offers. Nike Shox Cheap Wholesale . Air Max 97 Mens Sale . -- On any given day here at his companys Silicon Valley headquarters, Vivek Ranadive is ready to compete against any employee who wants to challenge him to any contest.Over the past two seasons, the B.C. Lions have had good teams that havent won a playoff game. And because of that those good teams are not remembered as exceptional, just non-producing playoff teams. This is a high pressure year in Lions football because of that fact. You can justify losing once, especially coming off a Grey Cup winning year, but losing twice transitions your team into re-evaluation and, sometimes, over-evaluation. Losing three times tends to lead to a more dramatic change. But can you build a team in May and June for success in October and November? Part of me thinks yes, if you have exceptional depth and a quarterback who performs at his best when the pressure is highest - playoff football. Also, a nice balance of veterans and youth helps on your roster. Veteran guys know and have the ability to rise to a challenge, a playoff game, because they know how to raise urgency both individually and collectively. My argument that you cant develop a playoff capable team early relates to how teams change as the season progresses. Injuries are the single biggest factor. If you lose a lot of players over a season it is difficult to find new performers to play as well as their predecessors. Or if you lose key players, a quarterback, a top defensive back, your best receiver, that individual may not be able to be replaced without a drop-off in production. When it comes to training camp and the regular season, all you can do is demand and hope for progressive and consistent improvement so come playoff time, you are at your best and competing against yourself. Last year BC was good on defence but needed to improve on offence. They finished with the third-ranked rrushing offence, averaging 107 yards per game, but only seventh in passing with 244 yards per game.dddddddddddd. On the other side of the ball there was a clear contradiction. They allowed the fewest passing yards but were at the league bottom in red zone defence. It was tough to move the ball against the Lions between the 20s, yet easier from the 20-yard line in. The vast majority of the time the opposite is true: the closer to the goal line, the tougher to advance because the defence has less space to defend. An unusual contradiction. Still, when you study last season and notice that BC was seventh in kickoff returns and eighth in punt returns, you see just what may be the priority for improvement may not be anything with or without the ball. Where you start drives and the length of field you have to overcome determines success in a season as much as any other aspect of football. As always, the Lions strength will be personnel change at just the right time. More youth on the offensive line and more experience at quarterback will prove beneficial at key moments of the season. Travis Lulay will be ready to go but that is not the concern. It is whether he will be ready for 18 games as his shoulder will be tested at some point in the season. In what may turn out to be the smartest move in the draft, acquiring Kevin Glenn as a veteran alternative is a nice luxury that only half the league has.The Lions will win their fair share of games, maybe even more than what is fair. The question will be whether they can break the “one and done” streak in the playoffs. You cant really prepare for it until the week of. And that week is months away.  ' ' '

F1 teams have rejected a proposal to introduce an aggregate system for qualifying and are continuing to push for 2015s format to return. Sky Sports News HQ understands the teams have written to the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone to outline their opposition to the proposal of aggregate times in qualifying. With unanimous agreement required to change the regulations mid-season, the failure of teams to back the FIAs idea means the heavily-criticised elimination system will stay in place for next weeks Chinese GP. Teams have argued since the new-for-2016 qualifying rules flopped on their debut at the Australian GP that they wanted the 2015 rules to be reinstated. How aggregate qualifying would workHowever, the FIA and Ecclestone have resisted a complete U-turn and instead proposed other alternatives, with the issue becoming a political battleground. After some teams failed to back a proposal to only change Q3, the FIA floated the aggregate system for China - round three of the 2016 season - after another meeting discuss the way forward took place last Sunday in Bahrain. Although some team bosses initially gave the new idea more favourable response, further analysis in the following days appears to have shown the aggregate system would not prove any better than the little-loved elimination rules.Several drivers have been outspoken in their criticism of the system, with four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel labelling the idea s***.In a Sky Sports online vote, the proposed aggregate system proved more popular than the current elimination format - fans still overwhelmingly backed a return to last years rules. We expressed our opinion and all teams have had the same opinion that we probably need to go back to 2015, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said in Bahrain. But there are various agendas and the [Sunday] morning proved its not an easy one. So I cant really tell you. Last time I told you [qualifying would be changed] I was totally wrong.A return to the old system has not yet been given to the teams as an option.Speaking after the pre-race meeting in Bahrain attended by all 11 teams, the FIA, Ecclestone and tyre supplier Pirelli, Todt said: You need to be patient, by Thursday you will have all the information. I hope that fans will be happy. Is it time to change the qualifying format after just two races of the new season? Some of F1s leading drivers have their say The idea of aggregating two lap times together has been used in F1 before - albeit to little success in 2005 in a system that lasted just five races. With the latest furore over qualifying dominating the start of the 2016 season, the teams, Ecclestone and the FIA have become increasingly entrenched in their respective positions.Ahead of further key votes on F1s future in the coming months, Sky Sports Craig Slater said: What we have in Formula 1 at the moment is a full-blown civil war. On the one hand, Ecclestone and Todt who want to take the sport in one direction, and the teams who are extremely reluctant with the way they are ruling things at the moment. It had been a while since he started a game for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and his return came against Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the potent Pittsburgh Penguins. "Maybe there was some circumstances surrounding the game, but honestly I didnt really pay much attention to them or think about them much," Reimer said. "It was just the Toronto Maple Leafs playing the Pittsburgh Penguins, and I was trying to get in the way of pucks." Reimer got in the way of a lot of pucks Saturday night as he was the backbone of the Leafs 4-1 victory over the Penguins at Air Canada Centre. The 26-year-old made 37 saves to give Nazem Kadri the chance to score the game winner, and many of his stops came when the majority of the action was in the Leafs zone. "You dont win in this league without goaltending that gives you a chance, and Reims gives us a chance," coach Randy Carlyle said. Reimer hadnt started since Oct. 17 when he left 32 seconds into Torontos game against the Carolina Hurricanes after a collision with winger Josh Leivo. The long layoff didnt bother him. "I felt normal right from the get-go," Reimer said. "I didnt feel any uneasiness or uncertainty, really. The puck dropped, and I was ready to stop it." Reimer gave up a power-play goal to Kris Letang, the Penguins defencemans first of the season, 6:52 in but shut the door from there. One of his more memorable saves came on Malkin a few minutes later, and Dave Bolland went right down the ice and tied it up for the Leafs shorthanded. But Reimer was really tested in the second period when the Penguins turned up the heat on him and outshot the Leafs 16-4. He made a couple of stops on two-on-one rushes, denied Crosby of a one-timer goal at the side of the net and flashed his glove against Matt DAgostini to the delight of many of the 19,539 fans in attendance. "I thought he was outstanding," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "There was flurries and pucks around his net he was strong on. ... He certainly was the difference in the second period." Had Reimer cracked even once, the Penguins mightve been able to ride some momentum and cruise past the Leafs. Instead, Toronto still had hope at the second intermission. "I think thats been the story of our season, for the most part," said James van Riemsdyk, who assisted on Kadris goal and Phil Kessels later in the third. "Theres been stretches where we get outshot, but our goaltending is making big saves for us. Theyve gave us a chance allmost every night.dddddddddddd Thats all you can ask for out of your goalies." All Reimer and Jonathan Bernier seemingly need is a little goal support. Reimer got it Saturday night in the form of a strong third period led by the new-look first line. Kadri replaced Tyler Bozak between van Riemsdyk and Kessel, and Carlyle said after the victory that Bozak would miss at least 7-10 days with a lower-body injury. Kadri beat Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury 1:26 into the third after smart passes from van Riemsdyk and Kessel but took more pride in stopping Malkins line. "Were all on the same page offensively. It was great," Kadri said. "Its not just the offensive side of things, we took care of the D-zone. We were able to shut down a few of their key players." Bolland, David Clarkson and Mason Raymond also did a good job against Crosby, Pascal Dupuis and Chris Kunitz. Malkin finished the night with a minus-3 rating, while Crosby was a minus-2. As much credit as captain Dion Phaneuf and those forwards got for their defensive play, it eventually came down to Reimer, who didnt fold under a lot of pressure. "James played great. Both tenders all season have been unbelievable," Clarkson said. "Its always good when you can have that confidence in your goaltending. No matter who goes in net there we have confidence that if were getting outshot or outplayed, then we know what we can do." Reimer frustrated the Penguins all night and improved to 4-0-2 in his career against Pittsburgh. But he wasnt crowing about that success. "They have arguably the best players in the world, and they bring it every time they come and play," Reimer said. "Im just lucky enough to have teammates step up and play big games. I dont know if it has much to do with me more than the guys in front of me working their butts off. Again tonight I thought they worked as hard as they could, and they really earned it." Follow Stephen Whyno on Twitter at (at)SWhyno NOTES -- A CT scan revealed Leafs winger Joffrey Lupul did not have a fracture in his right foot and he will travel with the team on their Western Canadian road trip, according to Carlyle. The team hopes Lupul, who has missed two games after taking a shot off the foot in practice Thursday, will be able to play Tuesday at the Edmonton Oilers. ... Penguins defenceman Rob Scuderi left the game with a lower-body injury late in the first period after taking a hit from Clarkson along the boards. Bylsma did not have an update, saying only that Scuderi would be re-evaluated Sunday. ' ' '

Celtic all-but wrapped up their fifth successive Scottish Premiership title with a resounding 3-1 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle. A composed finish from Colin Kazim-Richards gave the Hoops a half-time advantage, which was cancelled out by Abiola Dauda on 57 minutes, before Patrick Roberts and Leigh Griffiths secured the three points for the champions. The win left Celtic nine points clear of Aberdeen, who defeated Motherwell 4-1 later in the afternoon, but with the Hoops goal-difference of plus-55, it would take a seismic event for the Dons to snatch the title as they can only equal Celtics current points-tally by winning all their remaining three fixtures, while Ronny Deilas side would also have to lose all three of their matches by significant margins. Leigh Griffiths wrapped up a 3-1 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle Celtic were on the front foot from the start and had the ball in the net after 12 minutes when Roberts weaved his way into the box and tested Neil Alexander with a low drive which the goalkeeper could only parry, and Callum McGregor followed up to knock the ball over the line, only to be wrongly flagged offside. Two minutes later Nir Bitton threaded a pass to Roberts who again placed his shot to the keepers right from inside the box and was thwarted by Alexander, who then got up to tip the rebound from Griffiths over the bar. Reaction from both camps after Celtic all-but wrapped up their fifth successive Scottish Premiership title with a 3-1 victory over Hearts But Celtic made the breakthrough on 17 minutes with a move which started on the left side of the halfway line before the ball was worked to the right side of the Hearts box where Mlkael Lustig delivered a chip to the back post where Kazim-Richards controlled the ball on his chest and crashed his shot under Alexander from six yards.Griffiths had a great chance to double the lead five minutes before the break when Prince Buabens shot was blocked by Bitton and the ball spun to the Celtic striker who raced forward from the halfway line and dispatched a shot from 20 yards which Alexander diverted wide with his legs. Callum McGregor had a goal wrongly disallowed at Tynecastle Hearts almost levelled the game three minutes after the break when Arnaud Djoum strode forward and hit a shot from 20 yards which deflected off Sviatchenko, and with the ball heading for the bottom left corner of Craig Gordons net the former Hearts stopper made a fingertip save. But Hearts continued to press and were rewarded when Dauda (57) collected the ball 10 yards inside the Celtic half before turning to drive through the visitors defence and send his low drive past Gordon from the edge of the box. Patrick Roberts restores Celtics lead in the 3-1 victory over Hearts Ten minutes later Lustig headed over the target from five yards with his back to goal after Sviatchenko flicked on a corner from Roberts as Celtic tried to regain the lead. And they did so 90 seconds later as Hearts dithered in defence with Alim Ozturk and Perry Kitchen playing poor passes before Roberts nicked the ball off John Souttar and showed terrific poise to slide his shot through the legs of the advancing Alexander.Celtic came close again when Kieran Tierney cut the ball back to Tom Rogic and he swept his first-time shot over the bar from 16 yards within a minute of appearing as a substitute. And Griffiths secured the victory five minutes from the end when he closed down a clearance from Soutter and then nutmegged the Hearts defender before beating Alexander at his near post with a low drive for his 30th league goal of the season. Both sides of the deal have formally announced acquisitions: TFC introduced Jozy Altidore as a designated player on Friday, while their counterparts announced a three-and-a-half-year deal with Jermain Defoe.LEDUC, Alta. - These are heady times for Taylor Hall and the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers (4-4-1) have won four straight games against Eastern Conference teams. But now comes an all too familiar challenge for Edmonton: trying to match up against their Western rivals. Edmonton began the season 0-4-1 against Western teams before getting back on track against Eastern squads at Rexall Place. But the final two contests of the Oilers seven-game homestand will be against the Nashville Predators on Wednesday night and Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. We certainly get excited about playing Eastern Conference teams, Hall said after practice Tuesday. Its pretty obvious the Eastern style lends itself to the way our team is built a little bit more than the West. But in saying that, I think the way our team is built this year is more capable of playing Western teams. It might not have shown in the first five games but I think as the season goes on you will see that. Head coach Dallas Eakins feels a reason for Edmontons success against Eastern teams, simply put, is confidence. It seems like weve got a little extra mojo and a little extra swagger when were playing an Eastern team, he said. Against the Western teams I feel were a little more tense and we have to get over that. Listen, Montreal is as good as L.A., theyre as good as Anaheim ... we should be able to play with every team in this league now. Veteran defenceman Andrew Ference, who joined the Oilers two years ago after seven years in Boston, credits the four wins to the Oilers playing more responsibly in the defensive zone. Youve seen a lot better job of five guys working ttogether to prevent chances, he said.ddddddddddddThe other parts of our game were going all right. The more glaring thing for me was the breakdowns that we have definitely limited, if not eliminated, on many nights. Edmontons 3-0 win over Montreal on Monday improved its record to 4-1 on the homestand. This time last year, the Oilers were 3-9-1 and en route to finishing with a 29-44-9 mark. Last year, Edmonton was 14-14-4 against the Eastern Conference but just 15-30-5 versus Western rivals. Despite its early-season struggles, Hall said the Oilers seemed to adopt a new mindset following a 2-0 home loss to Vancouver on Oct. 17. It seems like we have a different mentality on the bench, the bench doesnt seem to get as down, he said. I dont know if its maturity or what it is, but we dont have that quiet on the bench when something bad happens. Meanwhile, Eakins confirmed centre Leon Draisaitl, Edmontons first-round pick in Junes NHL draft, will remain with the club. Wednesday nights contest will be Draisaitls 10th and activate the first year of his entry-level contract. You shouldnt be surprised, said Eakins. Hes part of our hockey team. Hes earned the right to be here in the lineup (Wednesday). He continues to improve. His perseverance and commitment right now is outstanding. Draisaitl, a native of Cologne, Germany, turned 19 on Monday. He took the good news in stride. Im just trying to get better every day, he said. Just get up in the morning and get better every day. You couldnt say I was confident I would stick around but I think for the most part of the nine games, I think I did a pretty good job. ' ' '
