The Friday Musicale
Bloomington, Indiana

Since its founding in 1898, the NFMC has grown into one of the world's largest music organizations with club and individual members of all ages (see history). The NFMC is chartered by the Congress of the United States, and is the only music organization member of the United Nations.

Members are professional and amateur musicians, vocalists, composers, dancers, performing artists, arts and music educators, music students, generous music patrons and benefactors, and music lovers of all ages. Dedicated to finding and fostering young musical talent, the NFMC conducts annual Junior Festivals with more than 117,000 participants. NFMC offers more than three quarters of a million dollars in state and national competitions (see competitions), including four $10,000 biennial Young Artist awards, and the $10,000 Ellis Award for Duo-Pianists. The Young Artist and Ellis Duo Piano awards include two years of performance bookings.

The Bloomington, Indiana affiliate of the National Federation of Music Clubs. The formal organization of the Bloomington affiliate club began in 1906, although the group had existed informally for some years before then. At the September 21, 1906 meeting, the name was changed to The Friday Musical Club, in October of that year it became affiliated with the Local Council of Women, and in 1908 joined the Federation of Music Clubs. The "e" was added to the name in 1922 and the group has remained the Friday Musicale since that time.

The Club is a study group actively involved in promoting music education in many ways. It produces eight monthly programs a year, provides program contributions to civic and social affairs in Bloomington, and conducts exchange programs with clubs over the state of Indiana. Over the years individual members have also directed Junior Clubs, first established in 1921 and numbering six in 1979.
